Worms: 15 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 1)

Worms are a kind of creature not many people think about on a daily basis, but their existence is crucial to the environment. Here are some facts about them that a good number of people don’t know. Stay tuned for part two, coming soon!

Number Fifteen: One Acre Can Contain Many Worms

It’s been estimated that there are a lot of worms in dirt. Depending on the quality of the soil, there can be anywhere from 250,000- 1.75 million worms in an acre. That is an amazing number!

Number Fourteen: They Can Eat a Lot

Worms eat a lot on a daily basis. Usually, they’ll consume anywhere from 50 to 100 percent of their body weight. In a year, this means that they’ll usually eat about 10 pounds, which is a lot for something so small.

Number Thirteen: Worms Aerate The Soil

As worms eat, they aerate the soil. They do this by forcing air through the soil tunnels. This helps the soil become enriched over time. This is quite important in today’s day and age, where the soil is being continually depleted of its nutrients due to farming, fracking, etc.

Number Twelve: They Have Interesting Sex

When worms mate, they engage in the matter by going into a 69 position, and then exchange sperm with one another. Indeed, they are hermaphrodites. Honestly, the rest is pretty nasty.

Number Eleven: They Can Build From Their Bodies

When these creatures get injured, they are also able to completely regenerate themselves. This even means that if you would a worm, you could almost get half of your body cut off and still regenerate, which is amazing.

Number Ten: They Bury Things in the Ground

It’s a worm’s instinct to bury things in the ground. Even if it’s a man-made item, these creatures will bury it in order to decompose it, or, at least, to make an attempt at doing so.

Number Nine: Some Are Taller Than a House

Worms can truly get really big. In South Africa, for instance, they can be as long as 22 feet. This taller than most people’s homes around the world! There is so much more to know about these fascinating creatures. Stay tuned for part two, coming soon!
