Warby Parker is one of the most popular brands for people to buy fashionable, affordable eyewear. However, despite the fact that the brand has spent a considerable amount of time in the spotlight and under the scrutiny of the public eye, there are still some things that many people don’t know. Number Ten: The Name Comes From Jack Kerouac

One of the brand’s co-founders was in the New York Public Library one day when he noticed an exhibit on Jack Kerouac. After reading through several manuscripts, the co-founder noticed two interesting characters: Warby Pepper and Zagg Parker. The names were eventually combined to make Warby Parker.

Number Nine: Every Employee Gets a Copy of Dharma Bums on Their First Day

It’s true! In an homage to the company’s roots, it gives its employees a copy of the Jack Kerouac novel Dharma Bums on their first day of work.

Number Eight: The Story Behind Buy A Pair, Give A Pair

For every pair of glasses sold at WP, the company provides a pair of glasses for someone in need to sell. Rather than simply donate however many pairs the company sells, they train people in developing countries to educate other people about eye care and earn their own living by selling affordable glasses.

Number Seven: Warby Parker Sells Monocles

Seriously. You might think that a monocle would be something you can only find at an antique store or on eBay, but Warby Parker sells one, and it’s actually quite stylish.

Number Six: It Believes in Hiring the Right People

Obviously, any company interested in success is going to be interested in hiring the right people. At Warby Parker, there’s a little extra effort that goes into it, though. Co-founder and CEO Neil Blumenthal has stated that empathy is one of the main factors the company looks for in its employees, and he’s said, “If you select the right people up front, that’s half the battle.”

Number Five: The Hiking Trip That Started It All

According to Blumenthal (mentioned above), one of the company’s co-founders, Dave Gilboa, lost his glasses when he was on a hiking trip. He had to spend an entire semester of grad school without glasses as a result. The company was created so that people like Dave could afford glasses and not have to sacrifice style or productivity as a result.

Number Four: It’s a B Corporation

A B Corporation is one that meets incredibly high standards of operation. To be considered a B Corporation, companies must be certified by the nonprofit B Lab, which evaluates brands based on standards of transparency, environmental performance, and social standards. Warby Parker is one such corporation.

Number Three: The Soul of Their Brand Is in the Blue-Footed Boobie

The blue-footed boobie is an interesting bird found in the Galapagos. When designing the brand’s mood board, which is a collection of images designed to represent the brand’s “soul,” the blue-footed boobie was the first image selected.

Number Two: Every Store Fits Its Neighborhood

There are 20 freestanding WP stores all around the United States, and each one has been individually curated to fit in with its neighborhood. For example, the San Francisco store features a mural by a local artist, and one of their Southern California stores has wider doors to embrace the ocean breeze.

Number One: The First ‘Store’ Was Its CEO’s Apartment
