Turtle Facts: 15 Fascinating Things You Didn’t Know (Part 1)

The turtle is a favorite of many animal lovers out there. Most of us know that they can exist both on earth and on water and that they can grow to be very old, but there are some lesser known facts. Here is part one of our list.

Number Fifteen: The Shell Is Not What it Seems

I think many of us assume that the shell is some separate form of armor that these creatures wear, but that is not the case. The shell is more like an external rib cage and is made up of about 50 different bones.

Number Fourteen: Turtle Shells Can Bleed and Feel Pain

Contrary to what cartoons have shown us growing up, a turtle cannot take off its shell and crawl out of it, just as we can’t take off our ribs at will. In fact, the shell has nerves in it and can even bleed or feel pain if injured.

Number Thirteen: They Can Be Quite Scary

One of the most frightening turtles is the alligator snapping turtle, which can weigh as much as 200 pounds. It has strong jaws and a sharp beak, along with bearlike claws. It’s mostly carnivorous.

Number Twelve: A Fake Worm Appendage

This also a feature of the alligator snapping turtle, used for hunting fish. The brilliant evolutionary tool developed on the creature’s tongue, helping it lure prey right into its mouth.

Number Eleven: They Cluck

Many turtles make noise for different reasons, by swallowing or by forcing air out of their mouths. The red-footed South American turtle clucks like a chicken.

Number Ten: The Electronic Sounding Species

Another unbelievable sound-making turtle is the male Travancore. These exist in Southeast Asia and make a high pitched whining sound that resembles an electric motor. This is done to attract mates. Who could resist that?

Number Nine: The Belching Sea Creature

The strangest sound of all is probably made by the female leatherback sea turtle. It sounds a lot like a human belch. We hope you enjoyed part one of our list of amazing turtle facts and be sure to check back for part two, coming soon.
