Turkey: 15 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 1)

Turkey is a country in the Middle East. And that is was this list is all about – it has nothing to do with the bird. Nothing at all. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s look at some of the things about this historic nation that many people might not know.

Number Fifteen: Chicken is a Common Dessert Item. Well, not just plain old chicken. Chicken Breast Pudding is the name of the sweet poultry dish, and it combines boiled chicken, sugar, cinnamon and milk. It sounds strange, but it is common throughout Turkey, so maybe it’s worth a try if it’s ever offered to you.

Number Fourteen: It Has One of the Largest Malls on Earth. It is in Istanbul and it’s called Grand Bazaar. It’s 333,000 square feet, and as it’s been around since 1455, it is also one of the oldest malls on the planet.

Number Thirteen: Tourism is a Very Common Tourist Destination. When Americans think of tourist destinations, Turkey might not be the first that comes to mind. But the nation is actually the sixth most common tourist destination in the world. Part of this is due to its incredible history and culture, but there are also plenty of beautiful landscapes to witness in the nation.

Number Twelve: It is the Birthplace of Santa. Or Saint Nicholas, anyway. He was born in Patara.

Number Eleven: Turkey is Full of Biblical History. It’s possible that the Virgin Mary is buried near Ephesus. Noah almost certainly passed through Turkish land, and both Abraham and Paul were born in present-day Turkey.

Number Ten: You Can Run Into Plenty of Sea Turtles There. Much of Turkey is landlocked, but some of it is on the beautiful Mediterranean. On Iztuzu Beach, hundreds of endangered sea turtles gather every year and lay their eggs. Step carefully.

Number Nine: Tulips Originated There. Europe is known for its expansive tulip fields, but The Ottoman Empire initially fostered the growth of tulips and traded them to other nations. That’s all the Turkey information you get for now. But check back soon for the second half of the list!
