Top 5 Pop Songs about the United States

Whether you’re from the United States or not, chances are you know (and love) a song about America. Tons of artists have written songs about the US, from Bruce Springsteen’s rock track “Born in the USA” and Miley Cyrus’s pop hit “Party in the USA” to the angsty Green Day anthem “American Idiot.” However, many of the songs that receive the most attention are infectiously catchy pop tracks with fun melodies and great lyrics. Therefore, with the Fourth of July just around the corner, it’s only fitting that we celebrate the top five pop songs about the United States.

Number Five: American Dream – MKTO. MKTO have a super catchy and clever hit with their single “American Dream.” With lyrics such as “We were born to run / Cali here we come / Escape from nowhere USA” and “Whatever happened to the American Dream,” this track is the perfect American anthem to listen to this 4th of July. The American-themed lyrics of this song praise striving for success and the American dream, but then question its actual existence today. There is a lot of truth in these lyrics as well, such as when the duo sings about America being a “twisted paradise.” All in all, whether you blast it while you swim in the pool or keep your iPod close to the barbecue, you can sing this song all day long on the 4th of July.

Number Four: Made in the USA – Demi Lovato. “Made in the USA” is an epic track off of Demi Lovato’s fourth studio album, Demi. Lovato praises America and American culture by claiming that a love “made in the USA” is one of the strongest types of love there is. In addition, Lovato also implements stereotypical American items into this track, with lyrics such as “Our love runs deep like a Chevy” as well as references to the east and west coasts. This is a great, upbeat song for celebrating the 4th of July!

Number Three: Party in the USA – Miley Cyrus. Miley Cyrus’s mega-hit “Party in the USA” is obviously a must-listen for this 4th of July. With lyrics that include references to Britney Spears, Jay-Z, LAX, and Nashville, this track truly encompasses the essence of American culture. Released in 2009, Miley’s hit became an instant success because of its fun melody and feel-good vibe. The fact that this song is still popular today shows that it is the perfect song for the 4th of July year after year.

Number Two: Mrs. All American – 5 Seconds of Summer. I absolutely love this pop-punk track by Aussie group 5 Seconds of Summer. In the beginning of the song, singer and bassist Calum Hood croons “I love that accent you have when you say hello / You relocated from New York a month ago,” which is the perfect start to this American-themed track. Throughout the song, members Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Michael Clifford, and Ashton Irwin serenade the listener about how they love American girls and common things that American girls do. This track is definitely the most edgy one on this list but is still a perfect fit for a 4th of July playlist.

Number One: American Girl – Bonnie McKee. Without a doubt, this is my favorite song to listen to on the 4th of July! It is the perfect track to blast at any type of party, whether you’re tailgating or laying by the pool. Bonnie’s voice is perfect for this sassy upbeat pop track and conveys the lyrics to the listener excellently. The lyrics include references to ordinary American items such as 7/11, televisions, and vending machines that are not usually included in songs about America. Therefore, this song’s unique lyrics, infectiously catchy beat, and fun electronic influence make this song an excellent pick for a 4th of July party.
