The Scorpion: 15 Interesting Facts (Part 1)

Scorpion Top 10 Deadliest Animals in the World (Part 2)

The scorpion is not known for being the most cuddly animal out there, but they are nonetheless fascinating creatures. Here are some facts you did not know about them. Make sure to come back for part two of this article.

Number Fifteen: 400 Million Years and Going Strong

Scorpions have existed on planet earth relatively unchanged for over 400 million years! While most other creatures evolve a lot in this long of a time period, these creatures seem to already have perfected survival. They do only live for about 8 years, however.

Number Fourteen: Only 25 Species Are Deadly

Although all scorpions are venomous, not all of them can kill you. Only 25 species are known to have strong enough poison to kill a human being.

Number Thirteen: They Used to be Huge

One of the oldest animals on the planet, their evolutionary history stretches back an unfathomable length of time. They originally emerged from the sea and are much smaller now than they used to be. I, for one, am quite glad that they’re not gigantic anymore.

Number Twelve: The Scorpion Is Omni-Present

Because of their amazing adaptation abilities, these creatures exist nearly everywhere. There are species on every single continent except for Antarctica, where next to nothing can survive.

Number Eleven: They Are Related to Mites

They look similar to crustaceans such as the lobster or crab. However, you might be surprised to find out that they are more closely related to ticks, mites, and arachnids.

Number Ten: Scorpions Are Used in Medicine

They are used to produce pharmaceuticals. This is especially true in Pakistan where they go for a very high price per scorpion. A highly profitable but illegal trade.

Number Nine: Adult Scorpions Molt Seven Times

In order to grow to their full size, an adult has to molt up to seven times. They need to be especially careful after this process because their body is very sensitive until the new armor has some time to build up and harden into a protective shell. We hope you enjoyed part one of our list of interesting facts about the scorpion. Stay tuned for part two, coming soon.
