The Pig: 15 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 2)

We already brought you part one of this list of fascinating facts about the common animal, the pig. For example, the fact that they are much smarter than we thought and are also fast runners and excellent navigators. Here is part two of our list.

Number Eight: Pigs Do Not ‘Eat Like Pigs’

You’re probably familiar with people eating sloppily being accused of “eating like a pig” or “pigging out”. This is actually very incorrect since the animals prefer to eat slowly and thoroughly enjoy and taste their food.

Number Seven: Domesticated in Ancient Times

These creatures have lived alongside humans since a staggering 5,000 to 7,000 years back! They probably will be for many more years to come.

Number Six: They Build Nests Before Farrowing

Prior to giving birth, female pigs, or sows, create nests out of grass or other plants. This is such a strong instinct that factory farm sows become very agitated when they are unable to do this.

Number Five: A Pig Can Have a Sunburn

This is another reason why they like to coat themselves in mud, as protection from harmful UV rays. If a pig is healthy, its skin will be shiny, and free from scabs or wrinkles.

Number Four: Sailor’s Friends

These animals used to be kept aboard ships. This was because it was believed that if the boat crashed, the pigs could find their way to the nearest shore and save the life of the crew.

Number Three: The Unusual Gargoyle

In Scotland, there is a monastery founded by Melrose Abbey in the 12th century. This structure features a very bizarre gargoyle: a pig with bagpipes adorning its neck on the South wall of the building.

Number Two: 40,000-Year-Old Cave Paintings

These creatures go way back. In fact, they have been featured extensively in art spanning many eras. The earliest known depiction of a pig is in Spain and is believed to be 40,000 years old.

Number One: They Sleep in Groups

These animals usually sleep in the same shelter each night with a group of their closest friends. They will only sleep somewhere else if they have had a recent disagreement with one of the group. We hope you enjoyed part two of our list.
