Target: 15 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 1)

Target is one of the most popular stores and recognizable brands in the world. The discount retailer has become hugely successful as a place for shoppers to buy everything they need in one place. However, despite the fact that the brand has spent a considerable amount of time in the spotlight and under the scrutiny of the public eye, there are still some things that many people don’t know. With that in mind, here we present our list of 15 things you probably didn’t know about Target. Check out part one below, and stay tuned for part two, coming soon!

Number Fifteen: “Tarjay” Has Been Around for Awhile. You might think you were the first of your friends to start calling Target “Tarjay,” but in reality, the term has been around since the 1960s. Just ask your parents!

Number Fourteen: There’s a Purpose for Those Big Red Balls. Those giant concrete balls in front of many locations are there for a reason – to prevent cars from driving through the storefront. We’re not sure how many instances of that they’ve prevented, but we’re glad they’re protecting us nonetheless.

Number Thirteen: One Location Was Evacuated Because of a Joke. A Target location in San Luis Obispo, California had to be evacuated after a customer took control of the microphone and began shouting pornographic noises into it. Thankfully, the branch’s management got the situation under control, but we bet there were a lot of angry moms.

Number Twelve: They Know if You’re Pregnant Before They See You. In 2012, it was revealed that Target employees can use data analytics to determine the likelihood of a shopper being pregnant. In fact, the company is so good at analyzing the data that they can tell how far along you are. Speaking of which…

Number Eleven: You Can Breastfeed in the Store. It’s true! The company will allow mothers to breastfeed anywhere in the store should the need arise. Just a heads up if you have young children.

Number Ten: They Believe in Refrigerating Doritos. People began realizing that Target refrigerates its Doritos in 2014, and much confusion arose as a result. However, there’s actually a reason for this refrigeration – the company wanted to promote “walking tacos,” which require you to add things like cheese and sour cream to an open bag of chips (i.e. Doritos).

Number Nine: They Opened 11 Stores in One City in a Single Day. Not even Starbucks can boast this statistic! In 1993, Target opened 11 stores in Chicago on the very same day. Stay tuned for part two of our list of 15 things you didn’t know about Target, coming soon!
