Stone cottage in Asheville, North Carolina

Nestled in the dense woods outside of Asheville, North Carolina, is this 1941 stone cottage.

It is currently listed for sale at $575,000.

This Arts & Crafts style home was commissioned by Madeline Hollwerith and designed by Henry Gaines.

It has been updated but still retains a great deal of charm.

Let’s have a look inside…

The living room features whitewashed knotty pine walls, an 11 foot ceiling, and a granite rock fireplace.

I’m not sold on the “whitewashed knotty pine” – yet. But I can be persuaded.

The remodeled kitchen has all the modern amenities, however, it blends well with the vintage feel in the rest of the house:

This cottage has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms in 2,394 square feet – so it is quite spacious for a “cottage”.

Parts of the home have “horsehair sandplaster walls”. That sounds kind of cool but, as someone who lives in an 1870’s house with original horse-hair plaster, it gives me the heebie-jeebies. [As in: your kid punches a hole in the wall and you pull away the old plaster to find tufts of hair from a horse that died over 100 years ago….*shiver*]

Not that this Asheville cottage even oozes an ounce of grossness, no – this home is adorable!

image from:

The horizontal plank walls add such character.

Have a look at this sweet blue and yellow girl’s room…

The horizontal plank walls continue in the bathroom…

The built-ins, cubbies and nooks in this cottage give it almost a ‘summer camp’ feel…

One of my favorite images of this stone home is a small original window in the basement with filtered sunlight streaming in…

Such a peaceful retreat from our crazy world.

The stone cottage is situated on 1.23 acres right across from a lake.

Happy Friday friends!

I’d like to take this opportunity to give you an update on the status of my old house which is for sale:

[crickets chirping]

That’s about it!

Seriously, it has been D-E-A-D for the last month or so. I don’t think anyone has even taken a flyer.  🙁

But to tell you the truth, I am not that motivated to sell at this point in time. Who wants to move in the dead of winter? Or during the holiday season? Not I.

So we hang tight for now. Not really knowing where we are going to move anyway since the picken’s are slim at this time of year. For now, I’ll just hybernate in my sweet old house. Wake me up when the tulips pop!
