We brought you part one of this list of facts about SpongeBob Squarepants, the silly and lovable aquatic character. Now we’re back to tell you some more about him with part two.

Number Eight: Squidward Is Not a Squid

You’d think, given his name, that the character is meant to be a squid, right? Wrong. The animators decided against giving this pessimistic character the proper amount of legs because they thought more than six would be too much.

Number Seven: The ‘My Leg!’ Fish Has a Name

You may recognize this expression if you’re familiar with the show. It turns out the character who has come to be known for yelling “My leg!” when in stress has a name, and it’s Fred.

Number Six: SpongeBob Has a Knockoff Counterpart

This was based on marijuana imagery and is titled SpongeBong HempPants. The show came out in 2003 and was actually wildly popular.

Number Five: Some Episodes Were Inspired by Ray Bradbury

This famous author of Fahrenheit 451 has a collection of essays called Zen and the Art of Writing. Apparently, a newly hired story editor handed out copies of this book to the producers to give them ideas for episode material, and it worked!

Number Four: SpongeBob Was Called ‘An Instrument of Gay Propaganda’

Focus on the Family and other conservative groups targeted this show as trying to promote homosexuality. This was confusing to the show’s creator, who insists that SpongeBob does not even have a sexual orientation, and is, in fact, asexual. He is a sponge after all.

Number Three: Someone Bought a Giant Hasselhoff Statue Used for the Movie

In the end of The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie, there is a scene with live actors that involves a giant David Hasselhoff mannequin. The scene was written before the actor agreed to the part, and the statue ended up being sold at an auction later on.

Number Two: SpongeBob’s Wife is On the Show Too

The actor who does the voice for the beloved sponge has a spouse who is also in the show. Her name is Karen and she does the voice of Plankton’s computer wife.

Number One: The Most Popular Nickelodeon Show

Rugrats held this record previously but was beat out. We hope you enjoyed part two of our list!
