SeaWorld: 15 Facts You Didn’t Know (Part 1)



SeaWorld is the only marine mammal theme park in the United States. Along with rides the theme park provides dolphin and killer whale, sea lion shows, as well as zoological shows featuring other marine animals. However there are more fun facts about this water park you may not know!

Number Fifteen:  Only One Park Has The Most Killer Whales

SeaWorld of San Diego, CA has 11 killer whales. The park in Orlando, FL has seven, and the one in San Antonio Texas has five.

 Number Fourteen: SeaWorld Admitted to Sending Spies

In 2016, SeaWorld revealed it sent its employees to pose as activists and spy on animal rights organization, PETA. After an investigation by a law firm, SeaWorld’s Board of Directors forced management to end such practice.

Number Thirteen: The Feeding of the Mammals Requires Heavy Loads

SeaWorld’s animal staff provides close to 400,000 pounds of Romaine lettuce to some of their marine wildlife. They state the food is related to the rescue and rehabilitation manatee program. They also receive a load of 30 thousand pounds of fish once a week

Number Twelve: Sad News For Orcas At SeaWorld

Unfortunately the Orcas at SeaWorld are kept in captivity for most their lives, which can shorten their life span. Orcas in the wild have an average life expectancy of 30 to 50 years. The median age of orcas in captivity is a mere nine years.

Number Eleven: One Documentary Hurt Their Image

The parks’ marine mammal division have been the under the heat of public debate in recent years. Such criticism came to light when the documentary film Blackfish was produced after a SeaWorld trainer in Orlando, FL was killed by one of the park’s killer whales. The documentary was released in 2013 and has resulted in decreased profits.

Number Ten: The Annual Numbers Remain High

Even with bad press from a discriminating documentary, SeaWorld keeps the consumers comings. The marine mammal park has more than 11 million visitors per year, all three parks combined.

Number Nine: It Has Almost 50 Rides
