Russia: 15 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 1)

Russia is the largest country in the world and has a population of over 143 million. Their president is Vladimir Putin, and the country is both in Europe and in Asia, but these are all things you probably already knew. Here are some things you don’t. Come back to our page soon for the second part of this article.

Number Fourteen: Their Pipelines Could Circle the Earth Six Times

This could have to do with how huge the country is. The length of all of their pipelines combined is over 250,000 kilometers long, and the earth is only about 40,000.

Number Thirteen: Russia Has Nine Time Zones

Thought previously they had 11, the nation now has 9 time zones, which is more than any other nation on the planet. Apparently having so many time zones helps a lot with communication and transportation issues.

Number Twelve: Their Homicide Rate Is Twice as Bad as the U.S.’

Russia has a homicide rate of nearly 10 per 100,000, compared with nearly 5 per 100,000 in the U.S. Russia’s total annual count of 13,826 is, however, lower than 14,612 in the U.S.

Number Eleven: They Drink a Lot More Tea Than the U.S.

Russians drink between three and four pounds of tea per person every year, compared with half a pound the U.S.A. That’s six times as much. I think it’s quite well known that us Americans are more fond of our coffee.

Number Ten: Russia Is Larger than Pluto

We all know this country is big, but to give you an idea of just how big… By square kilometer, Russia has a larger surface area than Pluto. Although most of that space is taken up by one place.

Number Nine: Siberia Takes Up 77 Percent of Russia

When someone mentions this country, a lot of us automatically think of a distant arctic tundra. Well, it turns out this association is not too far off. Russia is taken up almost entirely by Siberia, though it’s also little known that the country has a surprisingly diverse variety of climates, including subtropical beaches and forests. We hope you enjoyed part one of our informative article about the largest nation on earth, Russia. Make sure you return for part two, coming soon.
