Rezoned and repurposed: mountain school house now a cozy home

This historic former schoolhouse in Pine Grove, Colorado has been for sale for a while now and I have been watching the price slowly come down (for my own selfish purposes).

I love the rural area in the mountains west of Denver and I love this Victorian era schoolhouse converted to a home. Unfortunately, I have an albatross house I need to sell first, so I thought I’d put my selfish impulses aside and share this place with you, my dear readers.

Built as a village school house in 1896, this building was listed on the Jefferson County Historic Register in 2004.

It is currently listed for sale at $169,900.

According to the listing description, this schoolhouse has been “Converted to a comfy home by a master carpenter.”

image from:

The home has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms in 1,417 square feet.

The former schoolhouse-turned home could use some “finishing touches” as the realtor suggests, but it has great potential…

This is the second antique schoolhouse in the Pine area of Colorado that I have featured here at House Crazy. The other former schoolhouse-converted-to-home is still for sale and you can view photos of that one here.

These two former schoolhouses are within a few miles of each other, but apparently that was common practice back in the late 19th century in rural areas. Before school buses – before automobiles – small groups of students would come together at the school closest to them by foot or by horse. None of this silly competition to get in the highest ranking school district. Just snow boots bopping along on Old Betty.

If you are looking for some vintage school-day charm and simplicity in the foothills west of Denver, you can see the complete listing here.

Finally Friday!

It’s been another frustrating week of potential buyers passing up my old house. Everyone loves the house but there are all these reasons why people can’t buy.

We are beginning to feel like either we, or the house, are hexed. I’m starting to get that ominous Hotel California feeling.

You know what I mean.

Last thing I remember, I was

Running for the door

had to find the passage back

To the place I was before

“Relax, ” said the night man,

“We are programmed to receive.

You can check-out any time you like,

But you can never leave!”
