Pregnancy: 15 Fascinating Facts (Part 2)

Pregnancy. Everyone knows a little bit about it, but there’s a lot of information out there that is lesser known. Earlier, we brought you part one of this list of facts. Here is part two.

Number Eight: You May Get a Black Line on Your Belly

This happens to three-quarters of pregnant women. It’s called linea nigra (or “black line” in Latin) and appears as a dark line running vertically down the stomach. It might disappear after giving birth, but for some people, it stays.

Number Seven: ‘Pregnancy Brain’

Because of needing to share their body’s resources with the new addition growing in the uterus, pregnant ladies have less oxygen in the blood. This can cause something known as “pregnancy brain”, which means increased forgetfulness.

Number Six: Your Baby Might Have a Fur Coat in the Womb

This phenomenon is called lanugo and covers the in utero infant in a layer of hair. Most babies, however, shed this hair before they exit the womb.

Number Five: Heartburn Means More Hair?

Speaking of hairy infants, did you know that women who suffer a lot of heartburn during their pregnancy are more likely to birth a hairy baby? Sounds crazy, but it’s true.

Number Four: Female Babies Have All Their Eggs In Utero

Baby boys don’t develop sperm until puberty. Girls, however, will already have all of the reproductive eggs they will use over the course of their lifetime before they are even born.

Number Three: Some Babies are Born with Teeth

This happens to one in every 2000 infants. Though most babies are born without teeth, some are, and most of the time the teeth need to be pulled shortly after.

Number Two: Vernix

In the womb, babies have a waxy coating on their body called vernix. Similar to cream cheese in consistency, some are born with the residue still intact.

Number One: Your Child Cries in the Womb

This is little known, but infants cry inside of the womb as well. Because of all the liquid, however, you cannot hear it. We hope you enjoyed part two of our list of interesting facts about pregnancy.
