PetSmart: 10 Fast Facts You Need to Know

PetSmart is one of the most popular places for people to shop for pet-related needs. However, despite the fact that the company has spent a considerable amount of time in the spotlight and under the scrutiny of the public eye, there are still some things that many people don’t know. With that in mind, here we present our list of things you probably didn’t know about PetSmart. Well, what are you waiting for? Check it out for yourself below!

Number Ten: PetSmart Saves Nearly 500,000 Animals Every Year

You might think of the chain as just the place where you get your pet food, but in reality, it’s much more than that. The company works with an in-store pet adoption partnership and two independent nonprofit organizations to save 450,000 animal lives each year.

Number Nine: Before It Was PetSmart, It Was PetFood Warehouse

The company was founded in 1986, and their very first stores opened in 1987. However, it wasn’t always called PetSmart. The first two stores opened were called PetFood Warehouse.

Number Eight: It Didn’t Have a Mission Statement Until 2014

According to the company’s website, they first introduced their mission in 2014. That mission is now: “We believe pets make us better people. That’s why we create more moments for people to be inspired by pets.”

Number Seven: 90,000 Pets Enter a Store Each Week

That’s week, not month or year! Every single week, 90,000 vaccinated and leashed pets set their paws in a PetSmart in the United States or Canada.

Number Six: Over Half of All Stores Have a Pet Hospital

You may have known that many stores have a “hotel” for your pet to stay, but most people don’t also realize that 60 percent of the stores include a pet hospital as well. The hospital provides preventative care and can also perform spay and neutering procedures.

Number Five: It’ll Train Your Dog for Free

Though the company’s pet training classes aren’t free, they’re guaranteed to train your dog. If you aren’t happy with the results of one class, you can take another one for free until you’re satisfied with the results.

Number Four: It’s Funded Over Half of All Veterinary Schools in the United States

The company is more far-reaching than most people realize, and this is proof of exactly that. In an effort to ensure that today’s veterinary students have the most up-to-date surgical training, the company provides mobile vehicles on veterinary school campuses where people can get their pets spayed and neutered.

Number Three: Most of Its Emergency Relief Funding Goes to Hoarding

You might think that the funds PetSmart raises for emergency relief go primarily toward puppy mills, but that isn’t exactly the case. Most of the money it spent on emergency relief in 2013 went toward instances of hoarding – puppy mills and animal cruelty cases were next on the list.

Number Two: Its Customers Make Up the Majority of Its Donors

Rather than donate millions of dollars to PetSmart Charities, the company funds the nonprofit using mostly donations from customers. That extra dollar or two that people donate at the end of their in-store transaction really makes a difference.

Number One: It Makes Over Eight Million Pets Look Good Each Year

Every year, the company’s groomers help style 8.8 million cats and dogs. The grooming isn’t only about looking good, however; it also helps to keep the pets as hygienic as possible. Thanks for reading!
