Panda Facts: 15 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 2)

We already brought you part one of our list of 15 things you probably did not know about the panda, and now we’re back with part two! Check out eight more fascinating facts about these adorable and misunderstood creatures that you definitely (probably) did not know below. You might be surprised by what you find out!

Number Eight: A Panda Is a National Treasure

In China, anyway. Pandas have long been a symbol of conservation and are prized throughout China. They’re so special to the country that pandas are considered national treasures there.

Number Seven: They Have No Natural Predators

It’s true! It’s easy to think that they would have a few considering how cute they are, but they’re large enough to kill just about anything that comes in its way. The only panda predator is the snow leopard, which will sometimes prey on panda cubs.

Number Six: They Always Sit Down When They Eat

How polite! Pandas never eat standing up.

Number Five: Pandas Have Six ‘Fingers’

There are six digits on a panda’s paw. They have five fingers, plus an enlarged wrist bone they can use as a thumb to grip bamboo.

Number Four: Their Tales Are the Second-Longest in the Bear Family

The only species of bear that has a longer tail than the panda is the sloth bear. Although it can sometimes be hard to see pandas’ long tails through all that fur!

Number Three: They Give Birth to Single Cubs, Not Litters

While many wild animals give birth to litters of many animals, this isn’t true for pandas. Panda mothers give birth to just one cub and they pour all of their energy into that one cub. If a mother gives birth to twins, it’s unlikely that both will survive childhood.

Number Two: They Use Spatial, Not Visual, Memory

Visual memory is the ability to look at something and remember the image in your head. Pandas don’t really have the ability to do this – instead, they remember information about their environments by using spatial memory.

Number One: Their Skin Matches Their Fur

If you were to shave a panda, you’d see that their skin is dark where their spots are and light everywhere else. We hope you enjoyed our list of 15 things you didn’t know about pandas!
