Moon: What Would Really Happen Without It



Many people admire the moon, but how important is it, really? Well, we’ve got some answers. Below, we explain what would happen if there was no moon, or if the moon were to just up and disappear. Number One: It Becomes a Black Hole. Though it could never actually become a black hole, it is interesting to think about in theory. So, what would happen if the moon became a black hole? Well, it would still have an effect on the gravitational pull and tides of the earth, but on a much different scale. The Schwarzschild Radius is the radius of an object if all of its mass is compressed into a black hole. The Schwarzschild Radius of the moon is just 0.11 millimeters.

Number Two: The Moon Simply Vanishes

Alternatively, let’s think about what would happen if the moon were simply to vanish. This is the second and more likely way it would disappear. So, if it were to vanish, then the tidal bulge, which is like a rubber band, would begin to ripple back and forth. Coastal regions would be flooded at first, but eventually the bulge would even back out, and the sea levels would return to a somewhat normal level. One little-known fact that most people might not think about is that the sun controls 30 percent of the tides, so we would still have tides on earth.

Number Three: Life After It. Though you might think all life would vanish if the moon were to disappear, you’d be dead wrong. In fact, it only reflects 12 percent of the sunlight that hits it, so it really doesn’t provide us with warmth like the sun does. In contrast, if the sun were to disappear, we would all freeze to death in just a few days.

Number Four: Resolution of Quantum Theory. Finally, one of the most interesting things that could be investigated if the moon were to disappear is the resolution of quantum theory and macro-level theories. It is known that subatomic particles can disappear and reappear over vast distances, but large-scale objects have not been observed doing anything of this nature. If it simply vanishes, this theory could be investigated further, and scientists might be able to move forward.
