Ladybug Facts: 15 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 2)

We already brought you part one of our series on the ladybug. Since there is so much more to learn about this amazing animal, here are few more factoids.

Number Eight: They Are Always Moving

If you hold a ladybug in your hand, their wings will constantly move as they try to get away. Their wings beat over 80 times a second while flying.

Number Seven: No Ladybug Is The Same

Even though each ladybug may look the same, looks can be deceiving. There are over 5,000 different species of ladybugs across the world and most do look the same. Differences in spots, color, and size are good indicators of a different species, though.

Number Six: They Have Long Lives For Insects

In the world of insects, a long life is hard to come by. Ladybugs have lucked out though with some living as long as nine months if they have good living conditions.

Number Five: Plants Are Necessary

With such a small body, ladybugs can’t really eat anything too large. Their main diet consists of aphids or plant mites and the bugs will eat up to 5,000 during its lifetime.

Number Four: They Are Slow Movers

Though their wings will beat quite a few times a minute, ladybugs are pretty slow fliers. They can only fly about 15 miles per hour whereas a dragonfly can move about 60 miles per hour.

Number Three: It’s Not Pretty When They Are Attacked

When ladybugs fight each other or other insects, the ending is not good. They will leak their body fluids following the attack. But the fluid is bitter and poisonous so predators learn to avoid it pretty quickly.

Number Two: They Can Be Found Anywhere

Ladybugs do not need specific conditions to thrive which means that they are easily found across the world in many different environments. But the best places tend to be warm and have plenty of plants for food sources.

Number One: They Are Fantastic Garden Workers

If the tale on how these insects received their name is true, then they must still be good workers. Garden lovers sometimes buy a few ladybugs to help maintain their garden so other unwanted bugs stay away. Thanks for reading our articles on ladybugs!
