Number Eight: It Was the First Metasearch Site to Do Direct Bookings on an App

In an effort to prevent its users from being directed away to third-party flight booking websites, Kayak was the very first metasearch site. It let users directly book flights on a mobile app.

Number Seven: But It Doesn’t Want You to Book Your Travel Plans Directly Through It

Despite the fact that Kayak was a forerunner when it came to directly booking travel plans on a meta search site, its CEO, Steve Hafner, has said that his plans with the company were not for people to book flights there. Hafner confidently believes that the best place to book many flights is on airlines’ own websites and apps.

Number Six: It Was Originally Created to Increase Conversion Rates

In web-speak, conversion is the ratio of times a consumer finishes a transaction to the number of times a consumer begins a transaction but doesn’t finish it. Hafner envisioned Kayak as a way to make the process of going from metasearch website to airline website smoother and easier.

Number Five: The More It’s Used, the Better it Will Be

Hafner has said that one of his goals is to personalize the process of planning travel. In order to do this in the best way, he and his team need to analyze data from hundreds of thousands of consumers.

Number Four: One of Its Co-Founders Teaches at MIT

We already mentioned that Steve Hafner is a co-founder and current CEO, but another co-founder is Paul M. English. English is currently a part-time professor at MIT’s Sloan School fo Management.

Number Three: It Had a Television Advertising Snafu

The company briefly had a television advertisement on the show All-American Muslim on TLC. However, in 2011, Kayak decided not to renew the advertising contract because TLC was reportedly not transparent in terms of the show’s controversial nature.

Number Two: Its Blog Is Actually Really Great

Many companies have blogs for the sole sake of promoting themselves; this is not the case with Kayak. Their travel hacker blog is extremely helpful and can help users both optimize the way they use the site and plan vacations on the best budget.
