Kangaroo Facts: 15 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 2)

We already brought you part one of our series on the kangaroo. Since there is so much more to learn about this amazing entertainer, here are few more factoids.

Number Eight: There Are Four Types

Though the name can be used for all types of kangaroos, there are actually four different species. They are the red kangaroo, the eastern grey kangaroo, the western grey kangaroo, and the antilopine kangaroo. Of the four, the red one is the largest.

Number Seven: They Like Plants, And Only Plants

Kangaroos are herbivores, and eat mainly grasses. They can survive without water for periods of time too.

Number Six: Their Habitats Vary

While kangaroos are found predominantly in Australia and Tasmania, their actual habitats do differ. They can live in forests, wooded areas, grassy plains or savannas.

Number Five: They Can’t Walk Normally

A kangaroo’s long feet do not let them walk like other animals. To slow down, one will use its tail to form a tripod with its two forelimbs. It then raises its hind feet forward, in a form of locomotion called “crawl-walking.” They also cannot walk backwards.

Number Four: Kangaroo Moms Fix Everything

When baby kangaroos or joeys are very young, they stick close to the mom. They stay so close in fact that if they get scared, the babies will stick their heads into mom’s pouch for protection until the danger passes.

Number Three: Deer and Kangaroos Share Names

Like a deer, a male kangaroo is called a buck and a female is called a doe. But a group of them is called a mob instead of a herd. A lack of antlers is a good way to tell the two apart.

Number Two: They Are Nocturnal

Most kangaroos hunt for food at night. They then spend the day resting in the shade – what a life they lead!

Number One: Males Box for a Female’s Attention

Male kangaroos will literally box each other for a female’s attention. Their front legs are not much of a threat, but their powerful hind legs and sharp toenails can pack a punch. Thanks for reading our facts on kangaroos!
