Kangaroo Facts: 15 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 1)

There is probably nothing more adorable than a mama kangaroo carrying her baby in her pouch. Besides having a pouch, though, there is so much more to know about kangaroos and here are just a few of them.

Number Fifteen: A Kangaroo Can Swim

When kangaroos are on land, they mainly hop with their legs together to get around and cannot move their legs independently of each other. While in water though, they kick each leg at different times which allows them to swim.

Number Fourteen: No One Else Hops Like They Do

Kangaroos are the only animals to hop as a means of getting around out of all the animals on earth. Hopping is a fast and energy efficient means of travelling which allows them to cover large distances in habitats where there is little food and water available.

Number Thirteen: They Are Born Relatively Early

Like other marsupials, kangaroo babies are born relatively early, around the seventh week of pregnancy for humans. They spend several months in their mothers pouch before venturing out, usually around four to five months and will keep coming back for sometimes as long as 10 before leaving on their own for good.

Number Twelve: The Moms Can Make Big Decisions

Very unlike humans, kangaroo moms can decide what sex their baby will be. They can also delay a birth if the environmental factors mean the baby will not live and then wait until conditions improve.

Number Eleven: They Have a Fantastic Sense of Hearing

Kangaroos have very good hearing. And like other animals, they can move their ears in different directors without turning their heads at all. So sneaky!

Number Ten: They’re Social

Like lion prides, kangaroos travel in groups of three or four. Other groups can be as large as 100 or more kangaroos, though.

Number Nine: They Are A National Symbol

In Australia, there are more kangaroos than people. The animals have a lot of room to roam free, and they thrive there. So, it is no wonder that they are the country’s national symbol and appear on stamps, coins and plans. Stay tuned for part two of our kangaroo series coming soon!
