Harry Potter: 15 Interesting Facts (Part 1)

Harry Potter has become one of the most beloved stories of the century. Appealing to both children and adults alike, the adventures of this well-known figure will be remembered for many years. We are here to tell you some things you didn’t know about the series.

Number Fifteen: Rowling Invented the House Names on a Barf Bag

When asked by school children in America how the author came up with the names of the houses at Hogwarts, she said she came up with them while on a flight. She wrote them on the back of a sick bag.

Number Fourteen: The Dementors are Based on Real Experiences

The author based the feeling that these prison guards bring on after the depression she experienced following her mother’s death, which she considers worse than sadness. Her mother’s death¬†happened in 1990.

Number Thirteen: She Created Quidditch After an Argument

She had a giant fight with her ex-boyfriend and walked to the pub, and then sat down and invented the game. She’s not sure what the connection was except for the fact that she might like to see him hit by a bludger.

Number Twelve: The Plants in the Story Come From a Real Book

Rowling found a book from the 17th century on herbs that contained a lot of “witchy” sounding plant names. From this, she drew inspiration for some of the flora described in the Harry Potter stories.

Number Eleven: Arthur Weasley Almost Died in Harry Potter

There was a scene where this character was attacked by the giant snake. Rowling considered ending his journey at that point, but she decided on keeping him in the story because he may have been the only good father in the entire series.

Number Ten: ‘The Deathly Hollows’ Was Given Code Names

This was in order to keep the much-anticipated book from leaking early. Among these code names were Edinburgh Potmakers and The Life and Times of Clara Rose Lovett: An Epic Novel Covering Many Generations.

Number Nine: Rupert Grint’s Funny Audition Methods

He had an unorthodox way of trying out for the role of Ron. He sent a video in of him pretending to be his (female) drama teacher, and also doing a rap about how much he wanted to play Ron. We hope you enjoyed part one of our list and be sure to return for part two, coming soon.
