Gmail is one of the world’s most popular email services and is used by millions of people every day. However, many people aren’t aware of some of the service’s most useful features. Here, we present our list of the top nine secret Gmail features you didn’t know existed. Don’t believe us? Check it out for yourself below!

Number Nine: Those Dots Don’t Matter

Many people incorporate periods (“.”) into their email addresses to separate their first, middle, and last names. However, if your email address is “,” Gmail treats it exactly the same as “” or “”

Number Eight: Use Boomerang to Effectively Procrastinate

Boomerang is an app that you can use to essentially “snooze” your emails. After reading an email, users can use Boomerang to return the email to their inbox after a set period of time.

Number Seven: The Perks of the Plus Sign

There are few things more maddening than learning you’ve accidentally subscribed to a newsletter you definitely don’t need. Next time you enter your email address somewhere, use the “+” sign followed by any word to track how it’s used. For example, if you purposefully subscribe to a clothing website’s newsletter, you could type “,” and you’ll still get the emails. Later on, you can filter your emails using that address to see if the website has given your email address out to anyone else.

Number Six: Get Gmail Notifications to Your Desktop

If emailing is your lifeblood, then make sure to enable desktop notifications. Rather than obsessively looking at your Gmail tab, you’ll get a little notification that pops up in the corner of your screen every time you get something in your inbox. To enable desktop notifications, go to the gear icon, go to Settings, and navigate to Desktop Notifications.

Number Five: Delete Your Entire Inbox in One Click

It can be incredibly liberating to delete large quantities of emails. Well, if you want to one-and-done your inbox, there’s a way to do it. Look at the box next to the refresh arrow in your inbox. If you select it, you can select “All.” You can then choose to delete every single email in your inbox with just one click.

Number Four: Un-Send an Email

There is a window of a few seconds after you hit “Send” that you can actually un-send an email. To do this, click on the gear icon, select Settings, and go to Labs. Once there, scroll down to find “undo send.” You can enable it in increments of 5, 10, 20, and 30 seconds after you send an email.

Number Three: All the Colors of the Rainbow

Most Gmail users know that you can use colored stars to label emails. However, most people don’t take advantage of all of the available colors. On top of yellow stars, there are also orange, red, purple, blue, and green stars, and there are also different boxes as well. Make your inbox a rainbow of organization!

Number Two: Use ‘Send and Archive’ to Minimize Clutter

If you get an email that you respond to but don’t need to keep, there’s a trick for that – Send and Archive! After typing your response to the email, instead of hitting “Send,” hit “Send and Archive.” The conversation will disappear from your inbox, but it will be archived – not placed in the trash.

Number One: Verify That You’ve Been Hacked

Being hacked is never a fun experience, but having your email hacked is an especially terrifying prospect. If you suspect you’ve been hacked, you can track all of the recent activity on your account. To do this, scroll to the bottom of your inbox, and click on the link in the bottom right-hand corner that reads “Details.” There, you’ll see all of your account’s recent activity and can verify whether or not someone has actually hacked you. Happy Gmailing!
