Girls: 15 Things You Didn’t Know About HBO’s Hit Show (Part 1)

Girls has been one of the more contentious shows in recent history, despite being a pretty huge success for HBO. Feminists have disagreed on the show, social conservatives have almost universally attacked it, and if you’re around the age of the characters in the show, you probably either love it or hate it. Either way, we’re betting that this list will provide you with some trivia you don’t know about the show.

Number Fifteen: Creator Lena Dunham’s Movie Tiny Furniture Features Many of the Same Actors

If you’ve seen the 2010 Lena Dunham movie Tiny Furniture, you probably think of it as being a sort of predecessor to Girls. Part of the reason for this is that on top of Lena, the movie features many actors that would go on to appear in the show, including Alex Karpovsky and Jemima Kirke.

Number Fourteen: Sean Penn’s Brother Composes the Music for Girls

That would be Michael Penn. You might not know that Sean’s brother is actually a well-established film scorer and music producer – he also does the music for Masters of Sex.

Number Thirteen: The Character Charlie Was Written Off Because the Actor Who Played Him Didn’t Like the Show

The actor is named Christopher Abbot, and he stated that he didn’t like the direction of the writing. This explains why he does not appear after season two.

Number Twelve: Tiny Furniture Caught the Attention of Judd Apatow

You might know that Judd Apatow is a producer on Girls, but you might not know that this is because he saw Tiny Furniture. After seeing it he approached Lena Dunham about making a show and she understandably said yes.

Number Eleven: All Four Leading Ladies Have Well-Connected Parents

Lena Dunham’s Carroll is a respected artist – a painter, mostly. Jemima Kirke’s (Jemma) is musician Simon Kirke who played in Bad Company, among other bands. Zosia Mamet (Shoshanna) is the daughter of renowned playwright David Mamet. Allison Williams’s (Marnie) father is the newscaster Brian Williams.

Number Ten: The Real-Life Marnie Is an Actress in the Show (But Doesn’t Play Marnie)

Dunham’s friend Audrey Gelman portrayed the girl Charlie ended up with after he and Marnie broke up. This adds a new dimension to that already uncomfortable love triangle.

Number Nine: All of the Main Characters Were Given Alliterative Names

You probably didn’t notice that all of their first and last names start with the same letters. The main characters include Hannah Horvath, Marnie Michaels, Shoshanna Shapiro and Jessa Johansson. Check back for part two of this list, coming soon!
