Here at House Crazy, we’ve seen tree houses and book houses and doll houses and gnome houses, but what about bug houses? You got it – a place for your pet insects to live.

Since most insects are just passing through, however, a “bug motel” might be a more appropriate term.

According to Wikipedia,

An insect hotel is a manmade structure created from natural materials, they can come in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on the specific purpose or specific insect it is catered to. Most consist of several different sections that provide insects with nesting facilities – particularly during winter, offering shelter or refuge for many types of insects.

These things are all the rage in Europe and just starting to become popular in North America.

Typically bug houses are constructed from natural and found materials.

Usually the wood or other objects have multiple holes drilled into them for maximum burrowing capacity.

So what kind of critter uses a bug motel?

Wasps, dragonflies, beetles, lacewings, ladybirds, moths, spiders, frogs, and even hedgehogs!

Unless of course if you are not a fan of bugs. Then I can understand how these things would make your skin crawl.

If that’s the case… my abject apologies for subjecting you to this post.
