Bali: 15 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 1)



Bali is an island in Indonesia well known for its beautiful beaches and mountains. It’s quite a popular tourist destination, and there are a lot of interesting facts to learn about it. Here’s part one of our list.

Number Fifteen: The World’s Most Expensive Coffee

This comes from Bali. It’s called Kopi Luwak and the method for collecting these coffee beans is very unusual. There is a cat that eats the coffee cherries of this plant but does not digest the bean. The beans are then collected for the coffee, so you get the idea.

Number Fourteen: Black Sand

You’d most likely imagine white sand surrounded by blue sea when picturing Bali, but they actually have some beaches with black sand. This happens as a┬áresult of cooled lava.

Number Thirteen: Bali Relies Heavily on Tourism

The nation relies heavily on tourists from all around the world to sustain its economy. In fact, 80% of its economy comes from hotels, restaurants, and related tourist events.

Number Twelve: The New Year Starts in Silence

The Balinese New Year begins in silence. The first day of the new year is known as Nyepi, and no one is allowed to be outside on the street. Noise and light are also kept to an absolute minimum.

Number Eleven: Tri-lingual Residents

Many languages and dialects are spoken in Indonesia, but Bahasa is the nation’s official language. Most residents of this country speak three languages; Balinese, Indonesian, and English.

Number Ten: Babies Are Not Allowed to Touch the Ground

For the first few months of their lives, infants must be carried everywhere. This is because they are considered tiny angels who must not come into contact with the earth. When they are allowed to touch the ground, there is a big ceremony to celebrate the event.

Number Nine: 3,000 Species of Fish
