Anorexia: 15 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 1)

Anorexia nervosa is a serious mental health condition that has awful effects both on the person suffering it and loved ones of the sufferer. People assume a lot of things about it, but there’s much to learn. Here are some facts you didn’t know about the disorder.

Number Fifteen: Going Out to Eat Can be Overwhelming

It seems like a simple thing to many of us, but people who suffer from this problem will find it one of the most difficult things imaginable. They may feel extremely uncomfortable but try to hide it from the people around them.

Number Fourteen: Anorexia Can Be a Sign of Something Else

It’s not always its own isolated problem. Anorexia can be merely a symptom of another disease or problem. Some common issues that can lead to this are depression, anxiety, or too much pressure in life.

Number Thirteen: Rituals

People with this problem often have a lot of strange rituals related to eating. These can include making their food symmetrical on the plate, or chewing the food only to spit it out.

Number Twelve: They Are Often Perfectionists

Typically people who have this disorder are known as “overachievers” or people who need to be perfect. This can make them feel overwhelming and helpless, leading them to seek an aspect of life that they can control (eating habits).

Number Eleven: Pressure Doesn’t Help

It could seem helpful to encourage people with this problem to eat more or maybe exercise a little less, but this tends to make the problem worse, and not better. It is more helpful to listen or help them gain access to professional help.

Number Ten: It Could be Genetic

Certain studies have suggested that this disorder may be genetic. It’s been said that if a family member has anorexia, you are 10 to 20 times more likely to develop it as well.

Number Nine: It Affects More than Just Your Stomach

Anorexia does not just make you lose a lot of weight or harm your stomach. It has negative effects on your entire body, including your brain and skin. We hope you found this article informative. Check back soon for part two.
